I finally got to the RSA building to see the SSA work. Another visit will be needed to view the RSA's own Open Exhibition but it's on into February. I thouht the SSA had excelled themselves. The formats were imaginative and varied with light installations and even a talking typewriter in one room. The range and quality of works exhibited seemed outstanding as did the presentation. There was no feeling of crowding in the hanging. I knew to look out for the work of Andrea Geile and Cecile Simonis, and Jana Embury, a recent Facebook friend whose work resonates with me. A large-scale print in four panels which i found arresting turned out to be by Paul Furneaux. I saw Joyce Gunn Cairns' painting on the theme of ghosts from the past and it affected me deeply. Seeing it on the wall rather than on Facebook I could see so much more the depth of it and expressive qualities. The image posted here is a detail from Andrea Geile's Level the Field, a very large-scale work consisting of several pieces made with Corten steel. If that's not an exciting and inspiring work i don't know what is.
