'Islands', an exhibition of work by Kirsty Palmer, in Gallery 1 at Patriothall, Edinburgh, until yesterday. I heard Phyllida Barlow on radio last Saturday, describing her approach of constructing much of her work in situ (including for the newly open 2017 Venice Biennale)So it was fascinating to be hearing Kirsty Palmer yesterday saying she made her 'For Grotta' in that way. The scale is very different from the prolific tumble of Phyllida Barlow's; each is suited to the scale of the spaces where they were to be exhibited. But thinking of Kirsty Palmer's work as a minimalist version of Barlow's was a slightly playful way for me to approach her work and it's true I found a lightness of touch along with the formal placing of the objects. I envy her sureness of eye. Here I'm posting a detail from 'for Grotta' (plaster} and a piece from 'Memorial for a lost object'. both 2017. For a view of the works in their setting there is a photo on Arts At Patriothall's Facebook page.
