Yesterday I was able to spend a good amount of time working on the sound piece I'm preparing for the group exhibition later this year. The first draft is just beginning to take shape, and so is at an intensely interesting stage for me when so much is possible and I'm not yet facing limitations of raw material (sound recordings), know-how or practical possibilities of the medium. The sound is still rough and will need refining. Time will become an issue at some point but isn't a pressure yet. There are so many editing options in the software that I am just getting to grips with.
By chance yesterday I was listening to Radio 4 when the 'slow radio' slot on the 9 am Sunday morning breakfast programme was broadcast - a clip of very pure sound, the creaking of a canal lock being opened and then the water gushing out. I have a sound file with canal water at full pelt, but there is some ambient sound and the recording itself is subject to the limitations of not being carried out with an external mic and muffler (must check out its correct name) to screen out any chance sound interference.
